Wisdom to the Rescue
Within each person is a conscience– a guide inside that tells us whether our actions are right or wrong. This guide is something that we program through the information we consume and the choices that we make.
Conscience can scream at us and provide shame about some behaviors, but if we persist in them or figure out ways to rationalize those behaviors away, our consciences will eventually stop nagging at us and we may think that the behavior is acceptable– until we encounter something that conflicts with our thoughts on the matter.
Then we either change the behavior or stay away from that source of conflict.
In Proverbs 2, Solomon wants us to understand that we should be programming our conscience with wisdom from the Lord. He tells us that this wisdom is both a source of success and a defense of integrity:
For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up success for the upright; He is a shield for those who live with integrity so that he may guard the paths of justice and protect the way of his faithful followers.
Proverbs 2:6-8
Wisdom will both teach you righteousness and guard you against the evil way. Renewing one’s mind with God’s Word daily will help to guide you, give your life direction, and will provide purpose. More than that, wisdom– God’s wisdom– will keep you from evil and falling. You’ll know when to run the other direction and you will be harder to deceive.
Wisdom comes to the rescue, helping you to know the right path to take, the right course of action to follow, and teaching you how to live.
