Understanding the Priorities
I have the benefit of working my first 10 years with my father in the same industry, for the same company, and for much of the time either sharing an office or being within talking distance. This doesn’t work for everyone– as we were reminded.
We would drive in to work together, even after I got married, work the whole day and ride home. We shared a relationship and I got to see the work side of him that you didn’t see from home. It’s also a daily reminder to make sure that I leave work at work!
As men who work, we do so in part to provide for our families, but if all you’re sharing or giving is money, you’ve got the wrong priorities, as another dad showed by getting a job at Food Lion with his daughter to be closer to her.
The man who took a part-time job at his daughter’s workplace to stop her getting lonely has said their bond is now stronger, with the move creating new memories he can “fondly look back on.”
Astyn Culp, 19, began working at the Food Lion Grocery Store in Newport, North Carolina in 2021. However, the business has struggled to hire reliable staff, with the teen often working alone with additional duties. So her father, James Culp, decided to help out.
“I knew I could bring some stability to her work life and reduce some of the stress she feels by having to cover shifts by herself,” James Culp, 42, told Newsweek.

Not everyone has the chance, ability or aptitude to do this, but it’s imperative that parents invest more than just their money into their kids– they need to teach them what it is to be a good worker, to take pride in what they do, and to be a part of their lives.
