I’ll Write This Post Tomorrow…
Distraction and procrastination are not new. People have put off jobs that they didn’t want to do for various reasons for ages. We’ve been perfecting procrastination and now have it down to an art.
Hence the saying, Do not put off to tomorrow what you can get done today! I’ve seen this most prevalent recently when I was attempting to get our family t-shirts done for our upcoming vacation.
Almost every year, we design family t-shirts of the same color to wear for at least one day during our family vacation. Usually, it’s of the iron-on variety– so we buy the shirts, the iron-on prints, I design something to put on the shirts, and then we iron them on one by one. Some years they’re fairly elaborate, others they are just single color.
But if you’ve ever done this yourself, you know that iron-on doesn’t always work the way it is supposed to. It washes out, peels up, or starts to disintegrate. Because of this, last year I had my brother put on a logo I purchased off of Etsy using his Cricut. No complaints there!
We have picked out the colors for this year’s shirts, and I have them and the transfers– I just need to get them to my brother. And here’s where procrastination plays a part. I can always find a reason not to drive them over to his house:
- I’m waiting for good weather
- I’m waiting to have one of the kids drive me over there
- I’ve got something else going on
- There’s no rush
Eventually, I decided I would drive them over there myself and just get it done, and he was on vacation and not home until the end of the week!
Laziness and procrastination are enemies that waste time– because we usually do not make all of the time that we have, and we can easily be distracted by screens and other things. Solomon knew that we have a propensity to put things off, and tried to tell us of the direction that we are going.
How long will you stay in bed, you slacker?
Proverbs 6:9-11
When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the arms to rest,
and your poverty will come like a robber,
your need, like a bandit.
What’s the solution? Commit to doing one thing– saying that you’ll just do this one part. What you’ll find is that, once you start doing it, you’ll have the motivation to keep doing it. Just don’t let that one thing be seeing “one video on social media”– because it works that way as well!
