Choosing the Right Door
The film The Matrix made popular the idea of taking a red or blue pill. The blue pill would allow the protagonist to stay in the life that he knew, the familiar. The red pill would show him the truth of his surroundings– what he already was presuming to be true, but couldn’t quite understand. The warning is that, after he took the red pill he could never go back.
Thousands of years before The Matrix, Solomon told us about two women beckoning from doorways with the same message. Both Wisdom and Folly make the same cry in Proverbs 9, “Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!”
Wisdom offers bread, and wine, and offers to help you to leave inexperience behind. She encourages you to stop mocking and learn. Folly tells us that stolen water is sweet and bread eaten secretly is tasty. In essence, Wisdom is the red door, and Folly the blue.
We innately know that knowledge is power– we are highly specialized people, often paying top dollar for people that know specific trades and can do them better than most. This differs from previous generations where a man would be a house builder and plumber, could work on his own cars, and troubleshoot most things. Now he pays for all of these things to get done. There are some that do DIY projects, but it all starts with gaining knowledge.
Wisdom tells us that we should look beyond what we see, and broaden what we know. The world that we see around us is not all that there is. The end of the choice of which door you choose is not visible on the outside– indeed, the call is the same. But one leads towards life and the other toward destruction.
Which door of life will you choose?
